Beechworth's climate and ancient, weathered soils also offer perfect conditions for wine growers with some internationally renowned artisan vintages produced at vineyards in the area. Grapes have been grown here since the gold rush when the first vines were planted. Small-scale vineyards flourished throughout the region and by 1865 nearly 90 acres of gardens and small farms in the Beechworth district were under cultivation.

 

Today some two dozen vineyards are dotted around the ridge tops and hillsides around the town, producing concentrated, intensely flavoured and highly individual wines. Visitors can sample the superb wines of the Beechworth Region at a small number of Cellar Doors close to town where you can meet the makers and soak up the beautiful views.
