Following the discovery of gold in Spring Creek in 1853, the town of Beechworth quickly became a busy centre for commerce, trade, government administration and law for thousands who poured onto the Ovens goldfields seeking their fortune. As business and commerce grew so did services such as education, health and communications. Beechworth was a vibrant, lively place enriched by the contributions of people from many different cultures. The legacy of the pioneers is preserved in historic buildings and heritage streetscapes, which remain for you to discover on this self-guided walking tour of the town.
Give youself about 90 minutes to complete the tour. This walk is wheelchair friendly.
