George Briscoe Kerferd

GEORGE BRISCOE KERFERD was sent out to Australia as a young man by his father to set up a branch of
the family business. He arrived on the ship ‘Albatross, April 1853.

As he stood on the wharf as a young
man of 22 years, and gazed out at the bustling scene of Melbourne, little did he know that he would one day be the 1st Mayor of the Borough of Beechworth 1863-1864 where he settled. He was a local brewer, became a Member of the Legislative Assembly and Judge of the Supreme Court and as Premier of Victoria would achieve his aim to bring the railway to Beechworth.
