GOLDEN HORSESHOES FESTIVAL – EASTER WEEKEND
Easter is a special time in Beechworth. The festival commemorates the 1855 election of Daniel Cameron as an MLC representing the Ovens electorate. The first Golden Hills Festival was held on Boxing Day 1960 and changed to the Golden Horseshoes Festival in 1966. Daniel rode a horse shod with golden horseshoes through the main streets of Beechworth. It was reported that the miners who supported Cameron were involved in wild celebrations including the consumption of many pannikins of grog. Today’s festival still features a Grand Parade as one of the major events along with food stalls, children’s activities, Easter egg hunt, a visit from the Easter bunny live music and much more. This event is held on Easter Saturday and Sunday each year. For more information contact the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre on 1300 366 321. www.beechworthonline.com.au/goldenhorsesfestival
